Reader Ritual App
Reader Ritual was a project in which I had to come up with my own app idea and design/prototype it. I came up with Reader Ritual, a gamified mobile app that helps users cultivate a reading habit through gentle reminders, goal tracking, and timers. Overall just a cozy app to help a person stay on track and keep a reading ritual.
Problem and Solution
Tasked with coming up with my own problem, and then creating an app to solve it. Decided on an app to help people who doom scroll online instead of reading, and helping them build a habit of reading. The first step to solving the issue was creating user personas. They are to show the ideal user of the app and showcases the diversity in the audience of the app.
The Design Process
I started off the process creating a webflow and wireframes for the app. We were supposed to do the webflow first, but I
had a hard time visualizing the process, so I did the low fidelity wireframes first which made the webflow a lot easier. I had a
good idea of how I wanted the app to work. I wanted a gamified element to it so people would want to use it every day.
The Next Step
I knew exactly what I wanted for my logo once I went in to start the mid-fidelity wireframes. In the low fidelity ones, you can see a quick sketch of what I wanted. I knew I wanted the R’s to reflect against eachother, but went with the other way. Then I was just struggling with the color palette. As I worked on that, I was completing my mid wireframes. This is where I really started expanding more and more and really developing meat for the app.
Figma Time!
Once I finished the mid wireframes, it was time to start putting things together in figma, which I had never used before, so it was quite the process. It was overwhelming at first for sure, but figma ended up being a breeze and Reader Ritual started coming to life! As I made each frame, I was (learning) prototyping as I went to make sure I didn’t forget anything, which made the process a bit slower, but worth it in the long run.
App Promo Video
The final step to this project was creating a promo video in Adobe After Effects. To save time, it was reccomended to use an Envato template. It was much easier to just plugin the words and screens into the template instaed of creating everything from scratch, but it took me FOREVER to pick the right audio for the video, and that was probably the hardest part. The only downside to the template, was leaving the color changes to the last, and discovering that those little animations and shapes are locked in there, and anything to change it is disabled.
